Yo mismo probé a hacer mis pinitos con el <strong>livestreaming</strong>, y no es una tarea fácil aún con las opciones que te dan servicios como Livestream o Twitch.tv. En Google lo saben, y por eso se dan prisa en ir ofreciendo a cada vez más personas la posibilidad de poder <strong>utilizar el portal de vídeos YouTube</strong> como herramienta de retransmisión en directo. Y a partir de ahora lo podrán hacer todos aquellos que tengan un canal con más de 100 suscriptores.</div>

Esto es una gran noticia para el <em>fenómeno YouTuber</em>, que son aquellos que han conseguido la fama sólo con el contenido que publican en YouTube (Dross, Elrubius o PewDiePie pueden ser unos ejemplos). El livestreaming de YouTube no requiere tantas complicaciones como las herramientas de sus rivales, y ahora no hará falta tener demasiadas suscripciones para poder usar estos recursos.</div>

Y no es que en Google lo limiten porque sí: sencillamente van ampliando poco a poco la infraestructura necesaria para que los millones y millones de usuarios del portal puedan retransmitir en directo. Seguro que pasaremos a tener streaming en directo para todos los internautas sin tener en cuenta el número de suscriptores en su canal en un futuro. De momento, para los que ya son aptos para activar el servicio, pueden hacerlo en el panel de propiedades de su cuenta. <strong>La activación dura un par de semanas</strong>, así que hay que ser paciente.</div>

Seguro que alguno conoceréis <a href="http://pando.com/" style="color: #cf4da5; outline: none; text-decoration: none;">Pando</a>, un programilla ligero y fácil de utilizar que permitía enviar archivos pesados entre particulares utilizando un modelo P2P desarrollado por Pando Networks. Pues bien, después de más de 7 años funcionando y con más de 27 millones de usuarios a lo largo de este periodo, <strong>Pando ha anunciado que cerrará sus puertas el día 31 de agosto</strong>. La subida de archivos se detendrá el próximo día 12 y los usuarios tendrán hasta final de mes para descargar el contenido que deseen conservar.</div>

El funcionamiento era sencillo: una persona subía un determinado archivo y compartía el archivo *.pando con quien quería que tuviera acceso al mismo. El receptor lo abría con el cliente y automáticamente comenzaba la descarga. Su ventaja era la <strong>sencillez en el uso</strong> (el programa apenas tenía opciones de configuración) y su fluidez, ya que el contenido se descargaba rápidamente de los servidores de la compañía y de otros usuarios al mismo tiempo.</div>

Hubo una época, hace algunos años ya, en la que Pando se convirtió en una alternativa real a la descarga directa, a BitTorrent y otros métodos de intercambio de archivos. Aunque inicialmente estaba pensado para enviar a un receptor en concreto ficheros personales pesados que no cabían en un email, el propio diseño del servicio <strong>permitía que éste se utilizase a gran escala</strong>, siendo uno de los preferidos en algunas comunidades, sobre todo españolas, dedicadas a las descargas.</div>

De hecho, ellos mismos en el anuncio de su cierre recomiendan otros servicios alternativos, como DropBox o WeTransfer. A pesar de la gran comunidad que tenía detrás, Pando no consiguió progresar e ir adaptándose a los nuevos tiempos, lo que ha terminado pasándole factura.</div>

Este caso no fue tan grave como el de Reader, ya que de The Old Reader no dependía casi todo el ecosistema <span class="caps">RSS</span>, pero aun así ha dejado a muchos usuarios sin el que probablemente fuese su lector favorito.<br /><br />Para evitar esto, la primera posibilidad que surge es usar clientes locales. Aunque la empresa que los desarrolla cierre, nosotros podremos seguir usándolo. El único problema es precisamente que son locales: <strong>no podemos sincronizar los datos</strong> entre varios ordenadores.</div>

La segunda opción, la que vamos a revisar en este artículo, son los <strong>lectores <span class="caps">RSS</span> para alojar en nuestro propio servidor</strong>. Gratuitos o con una licencia, obtienes el código y lo subes a un servidor que controlas tú. Es accesible desde cualquier ordenador a través de Internet, y lo podrás seguir usando pase lo que pase. Además, tiene la ventaja de que sabes perfectamente cómo se están gestionando tus datos.</div>

Eso sí, estos lectores <strong>requieren más dedicación que un cliente normal</strong>. Además de que la instalación es más complicada, pueden surgir más problemas y tendréis que preocuparos de mantener el servidor en funcionamiento.</div>

Si no tenéis un servidor propio en el que podáis instalar el lector, <a href="http://aws.amazon.com/free/" style="color: #cf4da5; outline: none; text-decoration: none;">Amazon</a> ofrece servidores virtuales con todo lo necesario de forma gratuita (siempre que no excedáis la cuota de uso, que debería ser suficiente para un uso individual). Y si no queréis un servidor, también podéis montarlo en vuestro propio ordenador, aunque perdéis la posibilidad de acceder desde cualquier punto de Internet.</div>

Empezamos con uno muy minimalista: <strong>Miniflux</strong>. Podemos importar y exportar nuestros feeds en <span class="caps">OPML</span>y añadir suscripciones con sólo la <span class="caps">URL</span> del sitio web (no hace falta bucear para encontrar el canal<span class="caps">RSS</span>). Está optimizado para ser lo más cómodo posible, descargando incluso del contenido completo de los feeds truncados, y además soporta los atajos de teclado de Google Reader.</div>

Miniflux es gratuito, liberado bajo licencia <span class="caps">AGPL</span>. Muy interesante, más aún teniendo en cuenta que la interfaz es muy fácil de usar y soporta los atajos de teclado de Google Reader.</div>

<strong>Stringer</strong> tiene un propósito similar a Miniflux: minimalista, con sólo las características necesarias para leer feeds y nada más. El diseño es muy bueno y fácil de usar, y al igual que el resto de alternativas soporta los atajos de teclado de Reader.</div>
